COVID-19 Blog Series: Introductions

Hello! We are so glad that you decided to visit our website and read our blog posts. At this point, we wanted to introduce ourselves so you have a better sense of who we are and what we are planning to accomplish.

In May 2019, Joon approached me to talk about a website to have mental health information for Korean Americans. As an immigrant to the United States and a PhD student in counseling psychology, he saw the need to provide services to this community. I thought it was a fantastic idea and quickly jumped into imagining what it would look like and how to execute it.

The subtitle of our website is “Boutique Mental Wellness.” Boutiques are small local shops where owners curate items from the broader market for a specific group of people. In the same way, we hope to take mental health information from the broader world and curate it for our Korean American community.

Since I am a Korean American born in the United States and a psychology professor, we thought this would be a great way to bring our expertise in psychology and Korean culture together. Another important part of this project is for us to work together as a first and second generation Korean American. Having our unique perspectives helps us to reach a broader Korean American audience. Both of these aspects help us to curate mental health information for you.

Our plans were to release our website in Fall 2020, but with the COVID-19 pandemic, we decided to release our blog portion. There is so much uncertainty out there, and we hope that the information we provide can be useful to you. We are still planning to do a YouTube channel later this year once we are able to. So, please check back as we continue to build the website.

It is important to say that this website and the information on it should not be seen as psychological services, such as therapy or consultation. We are here to raise awareness and educate the Korean American community in the area of mental health.

We hope you will join us in our journey of creating this website!
