COVID-19 Blog Series: Home Structure

COVID-19 came into our lives and changed everything, very quickly. Many of our work schedules, daily routines, and people we interact with all came to a stop. There is a general sense of fear that is in the air, and we are hoping that this crisis will come to an end. However, how do we function in this time? How do we try to maintain some sense of normality and productivity, when it seems the whole world is suffering? This question is even more difficult when there are young children at home, who cannot go to school as usual.

Creating a schedule for yourself is a way to keep things in check and help maintain you. A schedule can be daily or weekly. As you get started thinking about your schedule, make sure that you start small with just one or two new things at a time. All great habits start with a small intention and effort. Here are some pointers in creating your new schedule in this weird new world.

  1. Don’t make your schedule to be exactly like it was before COVID-19. Life is very different now. You aren’t traveling or going out as much. There are different responsibilities at home and work. It’s too much to expect that everything will be exactly the same. The stress of COVID-19 is taking a lot out of you, don’t underestimate how much it’s affecting you.

  2. Give yourself grace in your schedule. Like New Years’ resolutions, we may end up being a little too ambitious with our schedules or determination to make changes in our lives. Long lasting changes tend to come from small changes you make rather than large sudden changes. Remember, we’re trying to sow the small seed of habit and let it grow into a great life change. Stick to adding one or two things or items within your schedule. A walk, workout, reading time, tv time, or something related to a hobby.

  3. Give yourself time to relax and to yourself. This may be harder to do for large families or households, but always having time set aside for yourself is particularly important right now. Is there a book you’ve always wanted to read, a show you wanted to watch, a new hobby you wanted to explore? Set aside time to decompress and take care of yourself.

  4. Don’t plan out every minute of the day. It’s unrealistic to plan out every moment of the day. There may be unexpected needs that arise or an unexpected call. However, you can generally have one or two regular things in your day. Such as a walk in the morning or reading in the evening. A time to reconnect with family or a weekly call or virtual meeting with friends. Create space for one or two things and then let it grow from there.

Let those around you know of your schedule. Especially if you are at home with others, be sure to let them know of certain routines. It can help with accountability as well as setting boundaries.
